Our Story

Kennewick First Presbyterian Church has a long and rich history of growing disciples and serving Christ in the Tri-Cities, reaching back over 100 years.

It would be easy to tell our history through buildings, expansions and milestones – from a small building in downtown Kennewick to a I.O.O.F. Hall on North Ione Street to eventually the first phase of our site on Kennewick Avenue and the numerous expansions here; but that is only a small part of the story. We are not primarily a gathering place, but a people called by Him to be His presence in the world.

Our story is really His story and remembering all that God has done in and through the people of Kennewick First Pres – His people - these past 100 years. It’s about following the call to always be Christ-centered, prayerful, and enthusiastic about our place in God’s work.

It’s a story of putting value on having vibrant education ministries, not just for children but for adults as well. Our history is rich in encouraging people of all ages to not be afraid to ask big questions and, maybe, wrestle a bit. And then, with a clearer understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus, to act.

Our story is rich in community service and mission. We serve the world as we grow in our faith and challenge ourselves to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.

It’s a story about creating community and family, being open, welcoming and invitational while recognizing our call to move out of the church building and into the world.

Our story is about honoring our Presbyterian tradition of being reformed, and ever reforming as let by the Holy Spirit. It’s a tradition that reminds us that He is the way, the truth, the life, and, through the strength of our denomination, has gone into the world to give its love, its resources, its knowledge, its heart, its hope to the world.

Our story is one of recognizing that, over our 100-year history, how people seek to worship has changed in many ways. We have been nimble enough to hold our traditional worship and add in a more contemporary service. Music has always been a part of our story – we remain a congregation with a full choir, a bell choir and a praise team.

Our story is about making a specific decision to stay on our spot on Kennewick Avenue and serving this neighborhood. Throughout our history, we have worked to be good stewards of our property and facilities, using them to serve God in creative ways beyond our own Sunday worship. Nearly every day, the buildings teem with activities, programs and learning. We are so pleased to open our facility to two additional congregations: Iglesia Vida Abundante Spanish Church and House of Hope Ukrainian Church as they reach people in the name of Jesus.

We thank God for what He is doing in this corner of His world. We look forward with eagerness and excitement to the future here at Kennewick First Presbyterian.

We invite you to be a part of our story.
