Embracing Orphans – Part 1 Waiting for a new home.

 In Pastor's Blog

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” -James 1:27

For a few months now, I’ve had a large print Bible sitting on a bookshelf in my office.  I don’t know where it came from or why it landed there? But every day as I come and go from my office, I have seen it on the corner of the bookcase, and said a little prayer for whomever might need this Bible. It was waiting for a new home. As we prepare to leave for Jamaica this Saturday, I am busy packing and trying to figure out what we need to take for ourselves and for the family we are helping. The family we are building a house with is very loving and yet faces extreme poverty.  One of the requests they have is for a large print Bible. When speaking with the director of Embracing Orphans over the phone, I realized that the Bible I’ve had sitting on my bookshelf in the office was waiting for this family. It’s new home is with a kind woman in Jamaica who wants to attend worship and be able to read her Bible.

I prayed for years about making this trip to see the people of Jamaica and care for widows and orphans there.  It is a powerful experience to see that prayer come to fruition. I am reminded with the simple request of a Bible that God has been preparing things for this trip far longer than I have prayed or hoped to make it.  We don’t understand all the pieces that God puts together in our lives until we need them. It’s it amazing how God will use the resources and time, effort and love that we devote to serving one another and serving God?  I ask that you keep our team in your prayers this coming week. Just as this Bible is going to a new home, we will be building a new home for this sweet family to be able to care for their children adequately. Our mission trip with Embracing Orphans to build a home for a family in crisis and care for children at the Blossom Gardens Children’s Home is Nov 8 through Nov 18.

Our team includes: Pastor Hanna, Pastor Ashley, Vivienne Shearer, Kriss Peterson, Vic & Julie Epperly, Kern & Mary Kostenko, Betty Grace Wharton, Frankie Janysek, Stephanie Zimmerman, Margaret Christian,  and Josh Sheridan.

Thank you for your support of our team!  We have collected 66 twin bed sheets and 58 crib sheets for the Blossom Gardens Children’s home and clothing for the family.  Thank you for your financial support through Barnabas Mission Auction funds and our recent fundraisers of paint night, apples and bunco.  Please continue to pray for our team, for the family receiving the home we build, the children we serve at Blossom Gardens, the young women at Father’s House, and the leaders from Embracing Orphans.

God, you are the one who provides all our needs at just the right time.  Help us to trust you with our lives and our resources. Thank you for bringing us to Jamaica to care for widows and orphans and this loving family in need.  Help us to rejoice in the work you are already doing and we are privileged to join you. Keep us healthy, safe, and flights on time! Amen.

Warmly in Christ,
Rev. Hanna Peterson Shearer
