Trunk or Treat and the Kingdom of Heaven

 In Pastor's Blog

“Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.  Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.” -Matthew 19:13-15

We all love sweets.  Especially children… and candy.  Every day this week Paul has been announcing that TODAY is “trick or treat day” and gets very disappointed when I tell him, “No, it’s Thursday.”  I loved playing “dress up” as a child and have two trunks of play clothes for my kids to dress up with. It’s great fun to pretend to be someone or something different.  That’s the beauty of Trunk or Treat for me… the dressing up, pretending, and the candy. This year, we have a wonderful opportunity to share God’s love with hundreds of kids in our community.  It’s more than just tossing out candy to kids, it’s also making a connection and helping them to know that this is a church who is friendly and cares about families. This is a place for them to come in out of the cold and receive the gift of God’s love and presence.  This church cares about kids.

If you haven’t yet signed up to participate, please do.  We would love to have more cars participate. We definitely need more candy!!!  We can also use more help shepherding people and assisting with security. We want people to feel welcomed and know where they can go to find bathrooms, carnival games, food, etc.  We also need people to just walk around and be friendly, making connections while they wait in line. Talking with kids about their costumes, sharing God’s love over something trivial can be that first step in faith for a child.  When the disciples tried to keep the children away from Jesus, thinking they were a bother to him, he used them as an example of faith. Jesus rebuked the disciples and told them, “the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Whenever we share Jesus’ love with kids through Homework Helpers at Westgate, driving kids to Trailseekers, volunteering with Midweek, driving them home from camp, giving out backpacks or candy at Trunk or Treat, we participate in the kingdom of heaven.  It’s an investment in Kingdom work.

Loving God, you welcomed children to your presence and told people that your kingdom belongs to them.  Remind us of your work and your words. Give us your vision for the children and students in our community.  Bring families to our Trunk or Treat, keep everyone safe, and may we share your love as we serve together. Amen.

Warmly in Christ,
Rev. Hanna Peterson Shearer
