Route 66

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. -II Timothy 3:16-17

This program year we are embarking on a journey through the Bible.  Since there are 66 books which make up our Bible, our trip is called “Route 66”.  To share our faith we first have to know our faith and live our faith… then we are equipped to share our faith with the world.  If you have never read through the entire Bible, this might feel like a daunting task.  I assure you that even if you don’t get through every book each week you will learn plenty!  If you have read through the Bible many times in the past, I trust that God will continue to reveal new insights and revelations to you as well.

There will be times when we struggle to understand how a loving God would command his people to destroy another people.  There are lots of historical and sociological explanations, but the reality is that sometimes scripture is hard.  The stories don’t always make sense to us.  But, as Paul pointed out to Timothy, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”  (II Timothy 3:16)  It will be a journey we walk together to see how we learn and grow in our faith through God’s word.

We will provide a reading schedule each week.  If you want to get started early, feel free to begin with the stories in Genesis and Exodus.  If your small group or Bible Study group would like resources to use through this study, please ask Pastor Hanna or Mark Julson.  We have several options in the church office for you to use as a guide.

Speaking God, it often seems as if the word of the Lord is rare in our days.  We confess that we, your servants, may not be listening.  We prefer to do what we want, labeling our desires with your name and calling them blessed.  We disregard your voice when it comes from unpleasant quarters or through people with whom we disagree.  We insist that there is no other way.  We shut out and shut down, rather than waiting to hear your word.  We confess our minds and hearts are often closed, our ears ringing with our own voices.  Silence in us every voice but your own, and make yourself heard in this place again.  Amen.
