Matthew, the Gospel to Israel

“Do not think I have come to get rid of what is written in the Law or in the Prophets.
I have not come to do this. Instead, I have come to fulfill what is written.”
-Matthew 5:17

The New Testament Gospels recount the stories of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.  The rest of the New Testament tell us of Jesus’ disciples sharing the good news of the gospel throughout the world.  We will read each of the 4 gospels through the season of Lent, focusing on the stories of Jesus.  Following Easter, we will read through the Acts of the Apostles and the letters written by Paul and the other apostles to the churches.  We will end with the Revelation given to John at the end of May.

Each of the 4 gospels have a slightly different feel.  Matthew focuses on connecting Jesus to the prophecies written about him in the Old Testament.  He often states, “this was to fulfill what the prophets said…” about particular events in Jesus’ life.  Jesus makes it very clear that the New Covenant brought about through his work does not negate or eliminate the Old Covenant given by God to Abraham and Moses.  Jesus didn’t come to get rid of the Law.  He came to fulfill or complete the Law and the Prophets.  As we embark on our time in the gospels, may our journey through the Old Testament guide us as a foundation for God’s work in the world through God’s people.

God of the upside down kingdom, reorient us; for we seek to hide what you would have shine. From our fall in Eden, we have been embarrassed by the fullness of our humanity, and in our shame and fear have hidden ourselves from you. Forgive us, Lord, for it is truly our kingdoms which are upside down, and yours which is right side up. We need your help if we are to see the goodness of your creation, that we may rightly reflect Your goodness to the world.  Oh God of light, make us to be Your light, for the sake of Your salvation.  Amen.
