Election Day

 In Pastor's Blog

Jesus said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Luke 20:25

This election cycle has been fraught with conflict and strife.  Families and friends on opposing sides of political issues have turned into enemies.  It has been sad to watch the conflicts grow ever more personal and pointed.  I, for one, am relieved that Election Day has finally arrived.  I pray that we have a clear and resounding vote of unity and not a prolonged process of vote tallies and some new version of the dreaded “hanging chads” chaos of 2000!

Voting is similar to “giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s”.  Jesus was questioned about paying taxes and he asked the people to show him a denarius, “Whose name and whose inscription is on it?” Jesus asked back.  Then he told them to give back to Caesar what belongs to him.  As we exercise our right to vote and perform our civic duty, hopefully we have given thought and made decisions which are not only “to Caesar” but also honoring our faith.  The founding of this country was set upon separating church and state.  We can still be active in civic life and be a faithful Christian, but we must always remember that our first allegiance is to God.  It seems as though many people have confused their faith in God with their politics.  This is dangerous in many ways, but the most important thing to remember is to love our neighbor as ourselves; no matter how they vote or which sign is in their front yard.  However you may have voted, may we be unified as a nation going forward.  May we all be gracious in whatever direction the votes have been cast.  May we see the good in each other and not find fault or place blame.

As a church, may we be unified in our common faith and love of God.  May we strive to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.  Thank you for voting.  Thank you for continuing to pray for our leaders and our community.  Thank you for being the heart and hands of Jesus Christ in our community.

God of Welcome and Wonder, help us draw the welcome circle wider.  Triune God, you are the Sustainer, who brings all of us together. With nothing but a wind, you brought us all together. You brought unity to those who were divided by society You called to your family people of different passions, gifts, and voices.  Help us spread the news of your gospel that all might be invited to its abundance.  Amen.
