Pentecost Sunday

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

June 8th is PENTECOST SUNDAY! In honor of the gift of speaking in other languages, we will enjoy a combined worship service with some members of our House of Hope Ukrainian congregation as well as the Spanish speaking Iglesia Vida Abundante.

We often refer to Pentecost as the “birthday of the church”, since it was the day that about 3,000 were baptized and added to the number of believers in Jesus the Christ.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the disciples were able to speak in tongues and everyone understood their words in their own languages.  We encourage people to wear the color RED as a mark of the Holy Spirit’s tongues of fire.

Following worship, we will add tables to the lawn and enjoy a potluck lunch together with our sister churches.  We have activities for the kids, and want to have a true celebration of the work of God among us!  Sausage dogs will be provided, please bring a salad or dessert to add to the potluck table.

Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith.  We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
