Summertime

 In Pastor's Blog

“This service is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of this service, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” -II Corinthians 9:12-15

In the heat of summer (which we seem to be experiencing the hottest week of the year at the moment), I appreciate water more than anything else.  Water to drink.  Water to run through our sprinklers and keep the grass, flowers, and trees growing.  Water to fill our swimming pools and rivers to play in.  We are blessed with an abundance of water, even though, technically, we are located in a desert.  All areas of the world are not so blessed.  Our mission team with Living Waters World Mission is unable to go to Guatemala this August, as they had planned.  It is disappointing but it is impossible and imprudent to travel internationally at this time.

God continues to meet needs through Living Water World Missions, however, in spite of our delay in travelling to Guatemala.  The water systems we have sponsored in the past keep pumping clean, safe water for communities.  The water system we will sponsor when we are able to travel again, will be a gift of health and life to another community as well.

In response to the Corinthian church’s generosity, Paul encouraged the people to give cheerfully with joy in their hearts.  If our giving to God and the work of God doesn’t make us smile, we might be missing an opportunity for joy.  When we celebrate transformation in the lives of people around us and around the world, we give cheerfully and continue to thank God for his indescribable gift!  We also receive the incredible benefit of the prayers of those we have helped.  The power of prayer changes lives.  The power of giving changes situations.  The power of God to use us makes the Kingdom of heaven a reality here on earth.

Loving God, thank you for the gift of your son.  Thank you for using us to transform lives through Living Water World Missions.  Bless communities in need of safe drinking water.  Heal those who are sick and protect those who are well.  Use us to share your light and your life-giving water.  Amen.
