Be Salty!
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
-Matthew 5:13
Jesus told his disciples to be salty. In the ancient world, salt was an essential preservative. In order to keep meat safe to eat, you needed salt. It also serves to give flavor to our food. Salt makes things taste better! My husband, Jamey, works at Lamb Weston where they make french fries. We LOVE french fries, but if they don’t have salt, they aren’t worth the potatoes they were made from.
How is God calling you to be salt – help share the message of salvation with someone else – preserving their life for eternity? How might God be asking you to be salt – make life better for someone else?
This Sunday, we enjoy the blessing of hearing from our students in worship. It’s YOUTH SUNDAY! We will have a single worship service at 10am. This is the start of our summer schedule so worship will be at 10am from May 21 – September 3. (We will kick off our fall schedule with two services on September 10.) We also have the joy of sharing that our building loan is fully paid off for the new sanctuary! We will hold a ceremonial “burning of the mortgage” along with enjoying a BBQ lunch together.
Another wonderful tradition for Youth Sunday is giving out our High School graduate quilts. The quilters have once again out-done themselves by creating beautiful works of art to share with our students as a physical blessing to send them off into the world wrapped in our loving embrace.
Lord, You draw us together, and call us to be your church, to be your light, shining in the shadows, to be your salt, seasoning a sapless society. You envision the community we call “church” to be a reflection of life as you intend for all creation. But we’re more interested in deciding who’s in and who’s out… who’s right and who’s wrong… who’s a Christian and who’s not… who belongs at our table, and who doesn’t. God…your love is unconditional… Forgive our conditions. Make us the salt of the earth. Amen.
