 THE KFPC BUILDING PROJECT

A Brief History

What's included in the draft Schematic Design

What we get when we build this Expansion to our current Facilities

A Brief History

1999

Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) established by Session and a Strategic Plan developed

2000

Congregation-wide survey conducted by LRPC

2001

After extensive study of our facility needs and the future expansion of our First Pres Campus, LRPC proposed to Session the formation of a Facility Expansion Planning Committee (FEPC) to focus on and resolve the First Pres facility expansion needs

2002

Under the leadership of Kevin Ferguson, and with the assistance of an architect, FEPC began to explore plans to meet identified near-term needs which included:

  • Enlarging the narthex
  • Adding a large (40-50 person) meeting room
  • Creating additional classrooms
  • Expanding the nursery

2003

FEPC developed three major options for consideration by Session

  • Expansion of the existing narthex; remodeling and expansion of the existing Library Wing
  • Expansion of the existing narthex, remodeling of the existing Library Wing, and construction of a new 2-story building South of the Library Wing
  • Expansion of the existing narthex, demolition of the existing Library Wing and replacement of it with the new 2-story building

2004

Session received the report of FEPC and subsequently appointed George Garlick and Dan Kutschkau as co-leaders of a new Team charged with implementation of the FEPC recommendations for the building expansion as concurred in and approved by Session

2005

The VISION 2005, now the VISION 2006 – Building for the Future – Team was formed.  All of the FEPC options, including several variants thereof, were carefully analyzed.  Each of the options proved unsatisfactory primarily owing to 1) the cost for what was being achieved, 2) the disruption of current ongoing operations, and 3) the additional expense of bringing all of the rest of the First Pres campus up to code. Additional facility expansion options, therefore, were investigated by the VISION Team, and Architect, Ron Lacey of Bainbridge Island, was employed to assist in the process

2006

A draft Schematic Design, which incorporates all of the identified near-term facility needs, has been developed by the Architect. It has been crafted so as to maintain the existing facilities (with the exception of FPC, of course) undisturbed, and yet provides a new narthex, new space for our music programs, and a new sanctuary at an estimated cost comparable to the earlier FEPC Options 2 and 3. The Schematic Design has recently been revised to incorporate more than 30 changes suggested by the Ministry Teams, staff, and the Congregation. The revised design was then "costed out" with the assistance of the Construction Contractor, Apollo, Inc. Subsequent revisions were authorized by the VISION 2006 Design Review Team, chaired by Bob Iten, in order to reduce estimated construction costs.

2007

-- In January, Apollo, Inc. came forward with their Guaranteed Maximum Price proposal of $3.0 million for construction of the approved project. With architect, engineering, variable and other expenses, the overall project budget totals $3.75 million. On February 25th, the Congregation gave overwhelming support for a $2.0 million debt limit, and the Presbytery of Central Washington has concurred. The VISION 2006, now VISION 2007, Construction Team, co-chaired by Dan Easton and Gary Miller, has begun meeting monthly with the Construction Contractor and the Architect. Groundbreaking is scheduled for June 24th.
